Dying to Know What We Know??

Who Wants Longevity?

I know I do!! Especially now that I am a 40 year old mother of a 1 year old.

It is probably not a surprise to most, if you hear that in our society, we are spending more than ever on health care, yet mortality rates are on the rise, disease rates are on the rise, and for two years in a row, the average life expectancy has declined! Concerning?? I’d say so! We already know that this current generation of children are not expected to live as long. There are a lot of reasons for this, and FORTUNATELY there are a lot of things that are still in our control.
The CDC declares the reason for lowered life expectancy is due to drug related deaths, particularly pain medication prescriptions, but really there is more to it than this. We are also seeing a rise in many different disease states- diabetes, heart disease, cancers, etc. I’m sure these conditions lead a lot of people to need pain medicine. Did you realize that people can also feel more pain when they are not nourished adequately, or when they have genetic patterns that affect pain and inflammation, and these patterns become further compromised by nutrient deficiencies. Depression, also on the rise, can lead to altered pain tolerance and pain perception…. again, impaired nutrition can make this worse.
Let me give you an example:
What if a 45 year old female who is fair complected and has always taken very good precaution to avoid the “damaging” effects of the sun using her sunscreens and shielding her skin with hats, etc, unknowingly has vitamin D deficiency? This puts her at risk for a number of health conditions as a result of having low vitamin D levels- depression, fatigue, inflammation and more. If her health care provider isn’t checking her vitamin D level, she will not know this needs to be corrected. She may end up on Prozac (depression) and Adderall (ADD) at first, then maybe Mobic (anti-inflammatory) and down the road Ultram (pain med).
Poor food choices, increased exposures to environmental toxins, lack of sleep or even lack of quality sleep, increasing number of prescription medications used which are not without side effects and are not often studied in a polypharmacy setting (I once saw a patient in her mid 50s who was on 23 different medications-GASP!)- all of these things contribute to health, or should I say lack of health!
Would you believe me if I told you that the 3 rd leading cause of death in the U.S. is medical related errors?! These are the errors that we know about. I’d imagine that this is even higher, as a lot probably goes unreported or even unnoticed in this area.

Doesn’t it feel like this is all we are doing sometimes in medicine……

Functional Medicine looks to turn off the water.

So as our country is getting sicker and more and more money is being spent on health care, don’t you wonder why with so many resources for our health, so many people can not get to feeling better and actually being healthier?? There is a reason people are in more pain and “needing/seeking” more prescription meds that in turn, maybe contributing to them dying younger. Dr. Buchert and I want you to think about what is going on in the environment and behind the scenes within your body, because you can influence so many of these aspects, and we are here to guide you!! Pain is often a late sign of imbalance in the body. Toxins in our environment and changes in our foods are leading to a lot of inflammation and problems in our bodies. It is alarming! I wish everyone could hear this message and begin to take action on making the changes in their life that will help them to not be a part of what seems like the demise of health with our societies current state. As I mentioned earlier, the CDC has announced that for TWO years in a row, the life expectancy has gotten lower!
Don’t stand around waiting on our current conventional health care system to save you from your chronic illness or from a future chronic illness.
Conventional medicine is necessary for many situations, especially acute illnesses and emergencies, but Functional Medicine is the key to re-balancing the body and restoring health and not being part of the sad statistics that we are seeing these day. Functional Medicine is a systematic approach that gets down to the biochemical imbalances in the body and uses conventional medicine when appropriate.
Dr. Buchert and I work so hard to encourage people to make the changes that are truly life saving and lead to better quality of life. We are so passionate about this message that it would feel unethical to not at least introduce it to you. We understand change is a process, but we feel sad when the message falls on deaf ears, and we see people struggling with health issues that we know could improve with some key life style changes. Sometimes it is hard to get people to realize that this potential for healing verses just bandaiding (often the case with Conventional Medicine alone) a current condition is REAL and we see it daily!!
For those of you that haven’t already started working with us in the Functional Medicine part of  Mint Health , now is the perfect time to plan on getting more in touch with your body, so you can get off on the right foot in 2018! Are you ready to look at some of the behind-the-scenes issues that are keeping you from functioning at your best, and may even lead to a serious health situation in the future??
If you are seeing us on the Ob/Gyn days (Tuesday/Thursday), and you want to take a deeper dive than we are able to do with conventional medical workups and recommendations, please click on the ” get started ” tab below to begin your life-changing journey into Functional Medicine (these appointments are on Mondays and Wednesdays and are longer, more in depth, and offer more thorough “lab” evaluations to help us figure out YOU!).
