The Terry Wahls Story

Amazing Story of Regained Health

If you haven’t heard of Dr. Terry Wahls, your jaw will drop when you read her story.

Hi Everyone!
I’d like to share with you, Terry Wahls’ story of how she regained her health and her life. I never get tired of hearing this story, because it gives so much hope. So many people are suffering from a significant health condition and don’t realize that more can and should be done.
Dr. Terry Wahls, an Internal Medicine trained physician, was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called Muscular Sclerosis (MS) in 2000 after over a decade of “minor” symptoms that were ignored. MS is a disease in which there supposedly is no known cure. Over the next several years, Dr. Wahls failed treatment after treatment and her disease progressed more and more. By 2007, she had failed all that conventional medicine had to offer. She was at her sickest, using a recumbent wheelchair to get around, because she was no longer able to walk or support her body, and she was no longer able to work or care for her family. She knew she was on her way to being bed bound. Even though treatment wasn’t working, she still continued getting monthly IV therapy of a very expensive biologic drug called Tysabri, because that was the only thing she knew to do. She felt terrible all the time, and she was depressed. Fortunately for her (as well as the many people she has now helped with her story), she began researching supplements that help with the brain and nervous system. As she researched, she began taking these supplements, and the decline in her health started to slow down. Then she began looking at nutrients needed for her mitochondrial to function, because as she researched, she noticed a theme, that mitochondrial dysfunction is a huge player, if not THE source of disease. Mitochondria are our energy warehouses in every cell of our body. There are essential nutrients that are necessary for them to function properly. Lack of nutrients and exposure to too many toxins (we are drowning in toxins these days!) can cause our mitochondria not to function properly. As she learned about these essential nutrients and considered the supplements that would be needed, she thought, what foods can I get these nutrients from? So she researched what foods contain these nutrients and put together a “diet”, ie “way of eating”, so that she could incorporate the healing nutrients her mitochondria needed.

Her diet to feed mitochondria- 3 cups of dark green leafy vegetables, 3 cups of sulfur rich vegetables, 3 cups of bright colored vegetables and fruit, organ meats (once a week), grass fed meats (daily) , and sea weed (at least once a week), rotating different fruits and vegetables to ensure a variety.
So after just 3 short months on her diet, Terry Wahls was able to go to work using a cane; at 6 months, she could ride her bike around the block in her neighborhood; and at 9 months, she went on an 18 mile bike ride!! Needless-to-say she is now back working full time and spreading the word about the healing power of food and a functional medicine approach to health.
If you do this, you will dramatically increase the amount of nutrients in your body!!
Yes it may cost more to eat these foods now, but these foods will restore your health and vitality, thereby saving you money on nursing home care when you get older, prescriptions and other medical care needs along the way, and lost time in work and productivity down the road!
We have a choice to eat foods that nourish our cells, or foods that do that opposite- harm our cells.

Whether you have an autoimmune condition, chronic inflammation, hypertension, chronic fatigue, some type of severe neurological condition Parkinson’s or dementia, etc, you should know that your body is not made to be ill!!
“Are you giving your mitochondria what they need? This is where it all begins— with cellular health. If you want to be healthy, strong, and sharp, then your cells have to be healthy, and your cells won’t be healthy unless their (that is, your) mitochondria are healthy. That is how you start at the very root, the very beginning of the dysfunction in your body.”

And you don’t have to have a health condition or a health crisis before you choose to start taking better care of your body. Consider yourself fortunate if you realize before some “disease-condition” shows up in your body that lands you with 1000s of dollars in medical bills and you lose some of your quality of life to not feeling good.
The choice to start feeding your body with healthy nutrients will be one of the best things you do for yourself and your family. Pregnant moms and moms planning on becoming pregnant, this is such a powerful gift that you can give your baby, that will hopefully lessen the child’s chances of being a statistic with the rising disease rates in our kids.

Terry Wahls’ story is one of many healing stories that we see in Functional Medicine, which is why Dr. Buchert, and I love our job so much!! We get to help people learn to give their body what it needs to be well. I love the fact that Dr. Wahls has continued her training in integrative medicine at the same place Dr. Buchert and I did our studies, the Institute of Functional Medicine .
Hopefully this gives you some motivation to make some changes in the upcoming year- 2018 !!!
Some suggestions for 2018 resolutions:
  • Consider giving up all fast food.
  • If you don’t already, start cooking, so you can have more control over what goes into your body.
  • Get the kiddos involved in cooking. If our kids don’t learn how to cook, they will have a hard time being healthy when they grow up. Also kids are more likely to eat something new or different if they help with the preparations.
  • Give up sodas
  • Eat at least 6 cups of vegetables and fruits a day.
  • Eat organic
  • Avoid processed foods

For those of you that haven’t already started working with us in the Functional Medicine part of Mint Health , now is the perfect time to plan on getting more in touch with your body, so you can be better equipped to start 2018 off right! Are you ready to learn more about how to take care of your precious mitochondria?? And to look at some of the behind-the-scenes issues that are keeping you from functioning at your best, and may even lead to a serious health situation in the future??
Dr. Buchert and I are dedicated to helping spread the word to you all and on helping you take action in ways that are truly healing and often lead to disease reversal and true disease prevention for you and your family.
